How
do
we... grow potatoes?

In March the children planted seed potatoes
in the Nursery garden.
There were no
signs of growth for a long time but we kept watering them.
Eventually
green shoots began to appear.

With the warmer weather and plenty of water
they quickly grew into healthy plants.
Small
flowers appeared on the plants but there were
no signs of any
potatoes, that is, until we dug them up.

The
children couldn’t believe just how many
potatoes were growing
under the soil.

We took the potatoes round to show the other
classes and along the corridor to Mrs Seaborne.

We dug up some
more potatoes and
took them inside to be washed.

When they were
clean we cooked them
in boiling water. About fifteen minutes
later they were soft and ready to eat.
There are lots of different ways to eat
potatoes such as, boiled, baked, mashed and chipped.

Later
in the week we made
cheese and potato pies.
First we had to
make pastry cases and
then cook and
mash the potatoes.
Finally we added the cheese and put
them back in the oven.
